Engine

The air-oil-cooled Big Boxer engine, now with a displacement of 2,000 cc, remains at the heart of the BMW R20 concept.

New cylinder head covers, a new belt cover, and a new oil cooler were designed for the concept bike to allow the oil pipes to be partially hidden.

The side view captures the air flowing through the intake funnels, throttle bodies, and cylinders before exiting through the exhaust system and megaphone tailpipes, resulting in the signature Big Boxer sound.

Style

The aluminum tank has been updated with a new design in the 1970s color “hotter than pink”.

The BMW R20 concept is color-coordinated with polished and anodized aluminum cylinder head covers, belt covers, and air intake funnels, as well as gunmetal Paralever struts, footrest systems, and ISR brake calipers.

The taillight has been seamlessly integrated into the single seat, which is upholstered in quilted black

Alcantara and fine-grain leather and emphasizes the dynamic roadster appearance with its compact back. The modern LED headlight is presented as a 3D-printed aluminum ring with an integrated daytime running light.

The main headlight appears to float in the center of the daytime running light ring.

Each of these particulars highlights the concept bike’s main point and adds to its distinctive personality:
The Big Boxer Culture is elevated to a new level by the BMW R20 concept.

Alexander Buckan, Head of Design at BMW Motorrad, describes the R20 concept as “a bold interpretation of the BMW Motorrad DNA.”
Its timeless roadster design is combined with cutting-edge technical features. Its oversized stature and understated design give it a distinctive personality.

 Powerful appearance

The BMW R20 concept is a motorcycle that exudes a strong presence in a relaxed gentleman’s manner, all the while embodying the hallmarks of BMW Motorrad: classic styling, superb engineering, and exhilarating mechanics.

The expressive tank presents itself like a sculpture, and the rear is stripped down to highlight the motorcycle’s power and clean lines, all of which are focused around the Big Boxer engine, which serves as the motorcycle’s focal point of immense riding pleasure.

Completely redesigned, the chassis forms the backbone with a black double-loop main frame composed of chrome-molybdenum steel tubes.

The BMW R20 concept blends tradition and modernity with a 17×6.25″ black disc wheel at the back

that is mounted with a tire measuring 200/55 and a 17″ spoke wheel with black spokes and a tire

measuring 120/70 at the front. A new two-arm version of the well-reviewed BMW Paralever has been developed, with an aluminum Paralever strut and a chrome-molybdenum steel swingarm.

The drive torque is fully balanced thanks to the kinematics design. Another excellent detail are the two rear axle carriers made of milled aluminum. The exposed driveshaft, which was shortened in order to be integrated into the roadster architecture, was conceptually taken from the R18, the iconic R 18 models’ visual centerpiece. Fully adjustable Öhlins Blackline components function both frontally and rearward as suspension elements.

The wheelbase of the basic vehicle geometry is 1,550 mm, and the steering head angle is 62.5°. The deceleration is handled by radially mounted brake calipers from ISR at the front and rear, which have six pistons at the front and four pistons per brake caliper at the back.

Furthermore, the 2-in-2 exhaust system completes the design flawlessly and produces the right sound character.

For enthusiasts of classic design with a modern twist, the R20 is a dream machine. Motorcycle.com describes it as “a bold interpretation of the BMW Motorrad DNA.”

Since the R20 is a concept bike, it’s unlikely that it will be produced in its exact configuration. It does, however, offer a peek of BMW Motorrad’s future. The concept’s emphasis on a strong yet elegant design and use of a larger engine hint at possible future directions for the brand. It remains to be seen if more conventional components are incorporated or if the final production model adopts the minimalist aesthetic.
