Design

Integrating a phone’s components into its external design allows us to highlight key functions in novel and innovative ways. By placing the cameras inside the NFC coil, Phone (2a) creates a new product icon: the eyes. Behind these is the phone’s intelligence hub, which functions similarly to a brain. This is also where Phone (2a) connects to the outside world. The camera records visual information, the Glyph Interface transmits data via video and audio, and the NFC coil sends and receives digital data. The elements are precisely positioned using a circular grid system. It extends all the way to the phone’s edge, resulting in more rounded corners. Creating a consistent and softer overall appearance and feel.

To pique interest, we’ve created a sense of symmetrical imbalance in which the lower half of Phone (2a) is purposefully designed to disrupt the flow of the top. The phone houses the battery, additional internal components, and a series of flexible printed circuits that connect the motherboard to the display, SIM card, and USB type C port. This part was inspired by Massimo Vignelli’s New York subway map, which was a graphical exercise that transformed an intricate chart into something simple and elegant. It turns out that the complexity of routing trains is comparable to that of routing electronics.

Nothing Phone (2a) introduces an industry first: a 90° infinity back cover. Adds a dynamic new dimension to our iconic transparent design while maintaining the phone’s structural rigidity and overall durability. To assemble, we used an innovative dual compression and injection process that allows for a thickness ratio of 2.2:0.8 (thickest to thinnest), compared to the industry standard of 2:1. Engineered by iterating the mould dozens of times with thousands of samples and testing it with over 180 different materials.

Functional customisation

Streamline your smartphone usage with customizable options that make sense to you. For a faster, more intuitive experience. Whether it’s a monochromatic theme that reduces the distracting nature of colorful branded icons or removing app labels for a less cluttered appearance, Nothing OS gives you control over your smartphone navigation.

Under the hood, Nothing Phone (2a) is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro processor, a custom-built chipset specifically designed for the phone. This octa-core processor, coupled with RAM options ranging from 8GB to 12GB, promises smooth performance for everyday tasks and even light gaming. Storage options include 128GB and 256GB, catering to different user needs.
