NORAD Santa Tracker: Festive Family Fun, Follow Santa’s Christmas Eve Journey
This Christmas, a joint US-Canadian military monitoring agency carried out its long-standing tradition of tracking Santa’s whereabouts to assist kids worldwide in determining when his present-filled, reindeer-powered sleigh would be arriving in their community.
At www.noradsanta.org, a 3-D interactive map with interactive elements depicted Santa Claus and his reindeer traveling a fictitious route around the world, with interactive elements that let visitors click and discover more about the cities they passed.
Christmas Santa Tracker
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) Santa tracker originated in 1955 when a Colorado newspaper ad printed a phone number for kids to get in touch with Santa, but it accidentally sent them to the military nerve center’s hotline.
Colonel Harry Shoup, the NORAD director of operations at the time, gave his staff the order to check the radar for any updates on Old Saint Nick’s whereabouts so as not to disappoint the little ones.
When not wishing good cheer to everyone, NORAD carries out control and warning operations for the aerospace and maritime industries. One of their responsibilities is keeping an eye out for missile launches from North Korea, which may have been on Santa’s mind this year since the most recent ICBM test was only a few days ago.
Sixty-eight years later, NORAD was still carrying out its longstanding practice of operating a makeshift call center from its Colorado headquarters to address the urgent inquiries of young people.
The group shared a picture of itself on Facebook, showing rows of people answering phones—some wearing red Santa caps, others in uniform.
Leading American officials, including President Joe Biden and his spouse Jill Biden, participated in the festivities.
“This evening, the President and First Lady participated in the North American Aerospace Defense Command Santa tracking calls with children and families across the country,” according to a statement released by the White House.
The tracker briefly lost signal earlier on Sunday, keeping kids in the Pacific area in the dark about his precise location.
Greetings, #SantaTrackers! #Santa is still flying even though our tracking map is experiencing a few technical issues! The organization that maintains the tracker posted on Facebook, “He is going to Fiji next,” and then, an hour later, they announced a fix.
According to NORAD, Father Christmas started his journey with an incredible first stop: the International Space Station orbiting Earth.
In addition, the reindeer-drawn sleigh was observed flying over southern Gaza, circling Africa, and traveling south to Palmer Station, an Antarctic research station.
After that, Santa traveled up through South America on his way to the United States, delivering about 100,000 gifts every second.
Before continuing their journey across the rest of the country, Kris Kringle and his reindeer were spotted entering US airspace near Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at around 10:00 p.m. local time (0300 GMT). To date, they have delivered nearly 5.5 billion gifts worldwide.
The NORAD Tracks Santa app and website offer real-time location updates on Christmas Eve, along with information about Santa’s last stop, next location, and anticipated arrival time. A global family tradition, NORAD’s Santa tracking is eagerly anticipated by families everywhere.

Technology companies eager to add to the holiday magic have joined forces with NORAD to track Santa. Together with NORAD, businesses such as Microsoft, Google, and others have developed interactive websites, mobile apps, and even virtual reality experiences that let users track Santa’s journey in real time.
In addition to its website and app, NORAD uses a number of social media channels to interact with the public. The worldwide audience is kept engaged and part of the excitement through real-time updates, interactive games, and behind-the-scenes looks at the tracking operation.
The magic and wonder of Christmas are preserved for future generations by Santa tracking, which has grown into a beloved tradition. Children looking forward to Santa’s visit and adults remembering their own childhood memories are just two examples of how the Santa tracking tradition unites people all over the world in a spirit of joy, giving, and togetherness.
More than just a technical achievement, Santa tracking is evidence of the enduring magic of Christmas, the strength of human imagination, and international cooperation.
